Masoek Sadja, simply translated into Be Welcome. A community of Dutch-Indonesian elderly in the Netherlands comes together every month to share stories and food. The slowly disappearing culture is being remembered by a younger generation. This photo series does not only serve as an insightful look into the community but also as a preservation.

Process description

The project began with a look at the Dutch-Indonesian culture in the Netherlands. To document the diminishing culture but also to show a personal memory of mine. The memory of walking around the hall with bingo tickets and trying to uncover the moves of the Potjo Potjo, the dance in the video above. The intention was to create a little peek into the feeling of the Masoek Sadja, and to immerse oneself with the help of visuals and sound.

Another element of the project is the duality of the Dutch-Indonesian culture. To show the clash between the dutch and Indonesian influences in everyday life. Take a look at my grandparents in their home. The clothing both western and Indonesian, the old Asian medicine and the Dutch flag and the sapoe lidi.
